A good designer can help you put together a cohesive plan that makes sense for you and your family and navigate the hundreds of choices available to you.
There is an advantage to working with a design/build company.
Your designer should be able to assess your site conditions and listen to what you want to accomplish. Your need for retaining walls or drainage conditions are all part of the site planning. As well as any hardscape considerations. Your designer needs to have experience with a wide variety of plant materials and their required growing conditions. In most cases a detailed drawing should be provided.
By working with a company that offers design/build you can keep your designer working with you and the contractor throughout the process. Your designer can help you navigate the costs associated with the installation and work directly with the crew to create the project of your dreams.
Not all designers are created equal.
Free design is often worth exactly what you pay for it. Expect to pay for experience. Often the design fee can be applied to the purchase when working with a design/build landscape company.
